Wider Reading
What is Wider Reading?
Wider reading is considered to be any reading material that a student reads that is linked to a topic that they are studying. It can take many forms including; articles, research papers and both fiction and non-fiction texts. Our teachers have created lists of texts that they feel will develop students’ love and understanding of the topics they cover in the curriculum.
Why do students need Wider Reading?
According to research carried out by UCL, “The Institute of Education has reported that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The IOE study found that children who read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling between the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read.”
Not only will our students build their vocabulary, understanding and deepen their knowledge for specific topics, but they will also develop skills used right through their journey in education.
Wider Reading Character Credits
We will be awarding character credits to students who fully engage with their Wider Reading. Throughout the year, we will be awarding prizes to students who actively read. To this end, we would like to emphasise that lists provided by teachers are an excellent starting point but that we also look forward to students making their own discoveries.
